Data Dictionary

Data dictionary is referring to a gathering and collection of terminology, attributes, definitions and more in regards to elements of data which are part of the integrations and systems. Within the context of a software project a data dictionary is aiming to improve communication by giving precise definitions to the terms allowing for guided interpretations of tasks.

Typically a data dictionary is represented in the forms of a file containing all of the necessary information about the metadata and defining which data is used, what its purpose is and how it is in relation to all of the other data. Such data dictionaries are in most cases divided into two types which are active data and passive data dictionaries.

Common use cases of a data dictionary

Data dictionaries are literally used everywhere in different areas. In the case of database management, they are a complete documentation of table structures, field definitions, and relationships, thus making it easier for the administrators to keep the integrity of the system.

Software development teams require data dictionaries to make sure that there is uniformity in the data handling across the different applications and also to ease the process of onboarding the new team members.

Business analysts are the ones who use data dictionaries to connect the technical and non-technical stakeholders, they are the ones who provide clarity on terms used and thus lessening misunderstandings.
