Byte Definition

Byte is a part of the unit system of digital information which comes from seven or eight bits. The function of it is to represent how many bits are basically required for encoding one single character of textual information using a specific computer system; thus, it is one smallest single unit of memory that can be addressed into computer architecture.

It was historically coined by Werner Buchholz back in 1956. Since then, it has seen high usage. In example, a bit can be thought of as a character; that would mean letter “P” has one byte, whereas the word “Path” would consequently have four bytes, similarly, it would relate in that very example eight bits and 32 bits, respectively.
