Diagnostic is referring to a specific software program which is aimed at testing the quality of software or hardware, troubleshoot the current state of the system and identify any arising issues within the program. In general diagnostic programs are capable of ranging from simple tools to fully fledged software which runs checks on a large cooperative software.

Software engineers are typically the ones that setup and run diagnostic programs which can work continuously throughout the day or be set into motion at desired times. Single-purpose diagnostics can check for certain configurations within the software while multi-purpose diagnostics can perform a multitude of checks aimed at various processes within the system.
