Benchmark Definition

Benchmark — is a software practice conducted during performance testing that serves the point of being a metric for assessment of quality. In fact, it could be referring to an established standard to which software products or systems can be compared to. By comparing results from the testing any given software to benchmarks, engineers acquire quantitive data and measurable insights into how well the program functions.

One unique attribute of benchmarks is that they are intended to be repeatable. If the result of a specific testing for a particular system is variable too much then it doesn’t meet the benchmark.
